A Comprehensive Guide

Fabric for T shirts are defined in 2 ways; material and knit type. These aspects are compared keeping the usage & budget in mind to select the best one.

Materials for T-Shirt Fabric:

Cotton VS Polyester:

Most common are 100% Cotton and Poly Cotton. We can compare these two materials based on below mentioned usage aspects while deciding for a garment. Polyester qualities are given instead of poly cotton. A proper mix of polyester is used in poly cotton fabric to achieve desired results.

Skin Friendliness:

Cotton is among the top most skin friendly materials. Polyester is usually lowest.

Durability:

Polyester is much more durable than Cotton.

Color Fastness:

Polyester colors are much more washing fast than cotton. Polyester can retain the colors for years and years.

Dimensional stability:

Polyester keeps the dimensions more intact

Heat Absorption and Insulation:

Cotton absorbs the heat. If the fabric is thin then it quickly disperses the heat into outer atmosphere; good for summers. If the fabric is thick, then it absorbs the heat and retain it; good for winters. Whereas, polyester works as insulation. It does not absorb and transfer heat or cold.

Water Resistant:

Polyester is better water resistant. Cotton absorbs water quickly.

Breathability:

Cotton is much more breathable.

Drapery:

Drapery is better in polyester.

Cost:

Polyester is much cheaper than cotton.

Sustainability:

Cotton is ecofriendly, being an easily decomposable natural material. Organic, regenerated & recycled cotton is more sustainable. Improved qualities are being tested that use lesser resources to grow. Polyester is a synthetic material. Scientists, still, didn’t find short and easy ways to decompose it. Its recycling is helpful for environment and sustainability.
